Welcome to the Friends of Slaithwaite Spa!
The Friends of Slaithwaite Spa is a motivated group of local individuals, who have come together to form an environmental enhancement group whose aim is to restore and enhance the Slaithwaite Spa Complex as an environmentally friendly open Green Space, capable of being used and enjoyed by all members of society.
The Slaithwaite Spa Pleasure Grounds was once a very popular pleasure resort and beauty spot with a reputation which extended far beyond the confines of Yorkshire.
It is over a hundred years since the original Spa building was built by Richard Varley. Of the discovery of the two mineral springs, “sulphur” and “iron” we can find no reliable records, except that they had been found a few years previously.
The residence and the bath house were completed in 1825, and for a subscription of 25s, persons could have a bath at any time during the season; not a bath in the accepted meaning of the word to-day, but as an accepted means of healing all manner of diseases. Those who were subscribers had to sign their name in a big book, which was kept under the steps.
